Olympian, the first Polish world record holder in swimming. He was one of the best swimmers in the world. A graduate of Wrocław clubs, it was in this city that in 1953 and 1954 he set the world record twice in the 100 m breaststroke, with a final result of 1:09.8. He also equalled the world record in the 200 m breaststroke, held by the Dane Glei, with a time of 2:37.4. In 1952 he took part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki. In 1954, at the competition in Turin, he won the title of European Champion in the 200 m breaststroke. After ending his competitive career, he was a coach and graduated in law. Despite his illness, he remained an active disabled competitor and a sports and social activist. Member of the regional authorities of NSZZ Solidarność, and later Fighting Solidarity. The Memorial (initially the Cup) bearing his name has been played continuously since 1990.
